We all know the classic television trope that involves mockingly asking someone: “Why you hitting yourself? Stop hitting yourself,” all while usually knowing it’s a) classic bullying tactics or b) damaging to someone’s physical or mental wellbeing.

For me it’s a question I started sarcastically asking myself five years ago and never stopped until I could admit one thing…

I was in fact, hitting myself

I really didn’t want to admit it but like most of life’s lessons it was revealed over time to me.

  • Stupid red light! Why did it have to turn now??
  • Ughh the grocery store line is so long! Why does it have to be so crowded right now??
  • This dress doesn’t fit anymore! Oh no, now what will I wear and how did this happen???
  • My project for work is due tomorrow?! But I’ve been busy complaining about my life I haven’t had time to focus on work!!!

(Yes, I meant to use that much unnecessary punctuation as it expresses my unnecessary emotional resistance)
