The ‘Head of Household’ Burnout

I wake up without (before?) an alarm as usual.

My body is stiff and achy.

My mind is already filling with my daily agenda.

My phone is not far from my fingertips where I know more notifications that I don’t want are waiting for me. Clients. Appointments. Colleagues. Reminders. Spam. Distractions. Family drama. It’ll all still be there after I have my tea I say silently to myself.

But first…

I notice that someone has forgotten to move the laundry to the dryer the previous day. So I start a re-wash cycle to avoid the “musty” smell I’ve complained about many times to the household.

On my way to the kitchen, since I am the first one awake, I see one of the cats has had a bout with hairballs all over the hallway rug. I scurry to the linen closet I spend too much time re-arranging only to find the cleaning solution fallen under an old box of Borax. When was the last time we even used that?

Now that the mess has been cleaned up and laundry has started, surely I am moments away from my morning cup of tea. But, much to my surprise when I get to the kitchen, I realize no one started the dishwasher before bed. Immediately I look at the digital message board on the fridge. In my bleary-eyed exhaustion last night I did manage to scribble…
