Stubborn as one of these? Image courtesy of Ashwini Chaudhary via Unsplash

As the story goes, when I was born the doctors had a hard time getting me to come out.

I just wouldn’t budge. Nope. They spent a lot of time turning me just so, only to have me migrate back the opposite direction. Eventually, they decided to wait it out and let me turn on my own — which I did, in my own time.

That was my very first act of stubbornness in the world and one that I have found hard to shake.

I am for most part a stubborn person who means well but once my heels are dug in…well you’re in for a long haul. As a child I was hard-headed and had to learn most things, you guessed it: the hard way. As I got older and looked at my behavior in college, usually choosing to work on things solo, rather than be slowed down by a group, I had an ‘Ah-ah’ moment.

It was me.

I was pretty inflexible. I wanted things my way. Being in a group meant I had to sit and talk through a slew of ideas that I didn’t really believe would work. I saw it as wasting time and being highly inefficient. And while I ended up doing fairly well in college, it came at a price. One that I have long since examied.

Welcome to Stubborn Town — Population: You

It’s hard to really recognize this trait in yourself, much like being a Dismissive
